Chilkat River Rafting Sunset Trip Explore Team Succession Concepts The Chilkat River is home to the greatest concentration of Bald Eagles in the world. This is home to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. This trip starts after dinner and you finish shortly after sunset (in Haines Alaska this is around 11 PM). Every guide is a naturalist to help you see and understand the unique beauty of this valley. During the summer months a large number of bald eagles feed on salmon in the river. As you float silently along, scores of eagles can be seen and photographed perched in the trees and stumps along the shoreline. Grizzly bears, black bears, and wolves also feed on the spawning salmon and occasionally you will see them roaming the river banks. There are also many moose inhabiting the lush forests of the valley. The Tlinquet Indians have lived in harmony with the river and the valley for nearly two centuries at their riverside village of Klukwan. Above all this beauty the spectacular peaks of the Chilkat Mountains loom high into the sky. Icy blue glaciers tumble from the lofty heights, carving away the mountains, grinding the rock into dust. It provides a time of intense personal introspection on the essence of life as you float through pristine wilderness. |
